As many of my friends know, I am a coffee & espresso nut! I love tinkering with grind settings. However, I hated the fact that every morning I had to wake up, then warm up my espresso machine. Ideally, I would like to be able to press a single button anywhere in the world, and have the machine ready by the time I get home. So, I started to develop my own IOT espresso machine based on a 1905 La Pavoni. The main reason I chose the La Pavoni is that it is simple. It is a workhorse, with many machines lasting decades or more! In addition it is easy to find spare parts as well as parts are fairly inexpensive for an espresso machine. There are no pumps, only a piston to control the pressure and volume. All in all, leveraging this unique fact about the La Pavoni takes a multidimensional problem, and converts it into a one dimensional problem: Simply adjusting the location of the piston dictates how the system brews espresso. All in all, I decided to start exploring my dream of an IOT espresso machine. I will be posting everything in my build process, my thoughts, and, of course, all kinds of pretty pictures of espresso!
